Visits to D.R. are on the rise

The Dominican Republic continues to be a top destination for Canadians. The newest Dominican visitor arrival details show the region with the highest increase in arrivals was North America and Canada.

The majority of the foreign tourist arrivals landed at the Punta Cana airport at 67.2%, followed by Las Americas in Santo Domingo with 15.5% of the total, and Puerto Plata at 8.5%.

Cruise Arrivals

The Dominican Republic has received between January and July 2019 a total of 907,545 visitors in 292 cruise ships.

Increased Air Lift

The airlines are making it easier for Canadians to travel to the Dominican Republic this winter season. Air Canada will be offering direct service between Quebec City and the popular sun destination Punta Cana, also, Air Transat announced the addition of direct flights from Vancouver and Hamilton to Punta Cana, and from London and Montreal to Puerto Plata. And Sunwing added a new flight from London to Punta Cana.

Environmental Roadmap

The Dominica n Republic seeks to play its part to minimize the impacts of climate change and pollution. The roadmap sets five targets for the accommodation sector in the Dominican Republic: to reduce by 25% greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, reduce food waste by half, a 25% of reduction in non-renewable energy use, the complete elimination of single-use plastics and the uptake of sustainability certification for hotels.

New Developments

The development of new Dominican properties reflects the high demand for tourism in the country. At date 2019, it was reported that 6,200 hotel rooms are currently under construction, which is 8.7% of the country’s current hotel supply.
